Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: The Bar B Q on the river
Comments: I agree with the lady below from Benton. Th Alben Barkley Museum is a joke. The outside looks horrible and the inside is as bad. They have just 3 or 4 items and the rest have nothing to do with Mr. Barkley. I was on this website and found an online museum which ws super. They even have his personal papers and diary. I will list that site for Paducah history lovers as ther is an online museum of Irvin Cobb also. The site is www.theautographcollector.net

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: Riverfront & Downtown
Comments: We came to Paducah last year ('04) for the 4th of July weekend and instantly made that an every-year tradition! The fireworks on the river, downtown attractions, mural wall, great food and friendly people made this town our "best-kept secret" getaway spot.
I'm amazed to see the negative comments on here. Before you ask, no, I didn't grow up in Paducah, no, I didn't ever try to get a job there, and no, I don't know who the families are that are supposedly scooping up all the jobs. But if you've been anywhere else, you must see that there are very few other places with the charm and history this town has. Not without the town succumbing to urban sprawl, losing its identity, or becoming every-other-town.
I grew up in a small town too, and I'd probably never move back there for a lot of the same reasons. But if you hate Paducah that badly, the beuaty of living in a free country is that you are free to stay away if you choose.
As for us, we'll be taking in the fireworks and watching the boat traffic on the river every summer!

Comments: Since paducah has started all this remodeling and sprucing up , why hasn't someone noticed the sad shape the Barkley Museum is in. He was the vice president you know, and from this area. it is a disgrace to see how run down it looks. in this one phone book it isn't even listed. this would be a great place for the school children to tour
since they go clear up between the lakes to look at an old farm to see how we old people use to live. what about the important people from our area that was a part of our government.

Comments: The bands that play downtown on saturday nights during the summer months are wonderful, one band that stands out in particular is Classic Waxx. They play mostly oldies, 50's and 60's. It is hardley ever hot durning the summer due to the wind comming off of the river. Only complaint i have is they need more food venders on the streets. That would make it great to grab a hot dog, burger, or a funnel cake, get a lawn chair and kick back and enjoy some really great, free entertainment. plus they close down the streets so your kids can dance right in the middle of the street.

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: I'm not there now.
Comments: I left Paducah as soon as I got my hands on my diploma from Tilghman in 1967. Moved to Florida where I met my husband of 35 years. We presently live in Atlanta, GA., but have lived in four states and moved 19 times with AT&T.
I felt like if I stayed in Paducah I would have withered up and died.
You couldn't get a job there unless somebody died, and there was an opening, or your last name happened to be one of the three or four old line families that lived there. And someone mentioned, Paducah never did like progress. I saw more new restaraunts open and close in my 18 years there than I have anywhere else I have ever lived.
Once I got out of there, I found that there was a whole new world out there, where you were judged by your standards and your abilties and not your last name.
I was engaged to a Doug Wells who graduated a year before me, but I broke it off before I left. I hope he is well and happy. And if he ever sees this, please email me.
I have an aunt and uncle there, but my folks moved to Fla.; so I haven't been back since my first daughter was 18 mos. old, and she is now 30 yrs. old. Where does the time go.
I hope Paducah is better these days than when I lived there.
Thanks for letting me visit here.
Debbie

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: The wonderful people
Comments: My aunt and cousins live in Paducah (McCracken Co.). I love the part of town where they live ... in the country. We have our yearly family reunions there. I just left last week. Hot like Florida, but such beautiful land, trees, etc. No beach, but my cousin has a pool. I got a great tan!
Also, I met a wonderful man last year in my home town who happened to be born in Paducah. (Great dancer, very kind and gentle.) He is back in the Paducah area now and I think he plans on staying. I would love to take some time to get to know him better via the telephone and relocate there one day if he stays. I've got his number and he has mine. We'll see what God has planned for that!!!
I wonder what kind of job opportunities there are for a Construction Admin. Asst.? I've been with a Constr. Co. in Sarasota for over four years now. Just curious, not planning on relocating for at least one year.

But heres the real problem we
have here in old Paducah. As
nice as folks are they are also ignorant, backwards, and
just plain moronic.They keep
voting in the same old corr-

I guess because they don't want progress. Thats why it is known to be one of the lowest paying area in the country. Well when U.S.E.C.
leaves and there is no more
decent paying jobs you can thank Montgomery, Coleman,

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: It's home....
Comments: You know, I read all of these surveys and was so happy to hear that tourists enjoyed it so much. There were a few exceptions, but that's okay. It's not for everyone. I currently live in Idaho, but will be moving back to Paducah within the next year. I can honestly say I can't wait! I always thought that Paducah was a little redneck town that I wanted to get away from, but now I don't know of a better place that I would want to raise my daughter. Both my husband and myself are from the area so our family still lives there even now. There are so many things to do in Paducah. There is the theatre, a wonderful bakery, Flamingo Row (I hope it's still there), the beautiful lakes nearby, the Quilter's museum, and so much more!! If I could ask some of you that respond to or read this from Kentucky, I am looking for a good friend that I lost touch with. I am looking for William and Phillip Baker. They are twins, so you can't miss them. I just want to say hello, and I miss them a lot. Email me if you have any contact info. Anyway, everyone, if you want to visit a nice little area and get away from the hustle and bustle...come to Paducah and surrounding area. It's worth it!!!!

Note from AboutPaducah.com:
Every local ISP has been approached about advertising options, every one has declined. If local companies like your employer, VCI, would like to advertise on this site, no one is stopping them. lol
Are you suggesting that we turn away national revenue dollars because your company does not want to take part? Sorry, we have to pay the bills to keep this site running. :-)

Usually, we leave Tulsa and drive on the interstate to Bowling Green as quickly as we can (~11hrs.), have our visit and turn around and drive home again, as quickly as we can. Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: Living here
Comments: I grew up in Paducah and have moved away twice. The first time was one year and the next time was for twelve years. Being in construction, I moved to several states. Some of those communtiies were either to small or entirely to large. This town always seems to grow but it always seem to be the right size no matter what. Several of the people that have moved here from California and other states to work these construction projects have a opinon that we don't have this or we are to slow at doing that, but by the time they have to leave, about 98% of those change their minds. What's even graeter is some of those people that didn't like this area, have made Paducah their permanment home. I still see them while out shopping around here and some have even let their hubands leave for other work and let them "COME HOME TO PADUCAH".

Although I live in the Bay Area (California), I live in a small city near the beach. It is very similar to Paducah. The seasons are more severe in the Paducah region and it takes some getting used to but we native Californians will move anywhere for love. I look forward to living there and becoming one of the friendly folks who reside in Paducah.

Comments: I did not visit Paducah recently but have been their many times. I am sure you were aware that the paducah American Legion team came to our city to participate in the Great Lakes Legion tournament. Your team was the victors but more important than that was they were perfect gentleman. It was a pleasure to be around your players and their supporters and there were many of them. Speaking as a resident I wish your team a National Chapionship.
You people from Kentucky showed real class.

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: Historic Downtown
Comments: We spent a wonderful week in June visiting relatives in the Paducah Area. My aunt and uncle reserved us rooms at the Executive Inn in Downtown Paducah where we were pampered by a wonderful staff. This hotel is a little city in itself, but then we took a tour of the wonderful downtown area. Our first stop was the Quilt Museum where we saw 200 + works of art. If you've never been inside this museum your missing one of the most beautiful displays in America. We then had a delicious lunch at Whaler's Catch in the "crow's nest" (outside) overlooking 14 giant sized fabulous murals painted on the floodwall. Truly a treat for both the eyes and the tummy? We then went to Seaman's Church the maritime center of the inland waterways...and got a peek of how riverboat pilots navigate the "brown" waters watching the giant screens of a simulator. We ended the evening dancing in the streets during Downtown After Dinner, a program where Paducah's dowtown is liturally turned into a street dance every saturday night. I especially enjoyed taking a horse drawn carraige ride around the market house. The next morning we went to a 11th generation bakery called Kirchoff's for scones, where we packed up a few dozen to take back to Dallas. Paducah...rich history, remarkable friendliness, and a wonderful attention to the details of what it takes to make a family reunion feel like really coming home!

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: The whole thing!
Comments: I've always been attracted to the flood wall, in part because of memories of my grandmother and of a certain flood, before the wall was built. We still have a letter she wrote in 1937 as she watched people row by in the streets outside. Now, of course, the wall is decorated with some of the greatest murals in the USA. The river itself is a favorite of everyone's. It flows with history, and always hypnotizes, with visions of steamboats dancing in your head. Then I always seem to end up admiring the unique facade of the Columbia Theater. That my dad was manager there some sixty years ago has a little something to do with it! Please don't ever let it be torn down. That would be a serious loss. Yes, Paducah is an interesting little town in many ways; a great place to visit; I always recommend it to people searching for true Americana.

Favorite thing about Paducah, Ky: Downtown
Comments: I think the only thing missing from the downtown area is more live entertainment at places that serve dinner and the pubs. There are many talented local musicians - you see them at the After Dinner Program during the summer, however they are not paid. I think Paducah should give something back to these performers, as the After Dinner Program would not be a success without them. The merchants should recruit some of these performers and offer them money to perform at their establishments. In reading upcoming events, the Quilt Show, the Millenium Celebration...there is little to no mention of entertainment other than big name stars. The city of Paducah and the surrounding areas such as the lakes area need to support the local talent and the aspiring musicians in this area.

Comments: There are several nice things to see and do in Paducah. The mall is a good thing, although a little hectic at times. But the revitalization of downtown is the best thing that has ever happened to Paducah. It is most beautiful at Christmas time with all of the lights up. Downtown Paducah is one of my favorite places in the state.
