ten commandments
By: Al - 1999-10-27
I don't think they should be posted in public schools. It's not like the school is a church, if it was a private and/or religious school, then they can post whatever they want up on the walls.

ten commandments
By: Elisa - 2001-11-12
I think that it is perfectly fine for the ten commandments to be posted in schools, public or private. The ten commandments are morals and standards that every human being should be obligated to and also want to achieve. People should not take things so personally, but should look at these life guidelines as life morals rather than rules of a specific religion that interferes with the first ammendment!!

Ten Commandments
By: Belinda - 2001-11-13
The Ten Commandments are common sense. Rules and regulations schools go by already follow the Ten Commandments. At any school(public or private) a child would be suspended or have detention for stealing, lying (baring false witness against someone), cursing(taking the Lord's name in vain), or killing. In my opinion, the Ten Commandments are already rules our children follow in public and private schools.

It's not like people are actually gonna read the ten commandments on the wall. You see them in Church every Sunday. It would totally bug me if I had to deal with the ten commandments in my school, besides, some people aren't even Christian, why would THEY want to see them?

Some people aren't even Christian so why should they have to look at the ten commandments of Jesus all day?

Nope

I am a Christian and I think that the Ten Commandments should not be posted. Our country was founded upon Christianity and the first ammendment gives us the freedom of religion. This is because God gives us the choice of whether or not to choose him and I think that posting the Ten Commandments would be imposing them upon the students.

I am a christian who strongly believes that the Ten Commandments should be posted. I think that if God was talked about more in our public schools and that is something students learn about then our world would be a better place. God's place!

Absolutely
By: Sarah - 2003-01-09
This country was based and founded on Religion, under God. Our currency says "in GOd we trust" what is the difference between posting the ten commandments in a public place and the statement on our money? Next people will want to take that statement off of our money!! When will it all end?? For there to be freedom of religion, there sure are a lot of restrictions!!!

Ten commmandments
By: Stefanie - 2003-02-15
I definentally do not think that religion should be enforced in schools. I am an atheist and find it offensive when i hear teachers telling my child that god created us, because that is not my families belief. It is hard enough to keep up with all the signs that are posted and bumper stickers we see. I especially feel separated because of the "in god we trust" on money, because who do they mean by we? I would be offended if the ten commandments were posted in my child's school, and likewise would a christian be offended if I had a plaque explaining that I believe god is not real and is no different that the belief in Santa Claus in a classroom with their children in it. Thanks.

Since prayer has been banned from school, people think that morale has gone down. This is why the Ten Commandments should be posted.
Look at things such as teen pregnacy has doubled and suicide has triped.
Yet this is just a sign of times changing. To prove it consider this.
Since prayer has been banned, segregation of blacks and white has decreased over 1000%, women's rights have increaded over 500%, Nazi's killing the Jewish has decreased 250%.
The 10 commandments will not raise morale because not every teen believes in them.

As a teen in the public school system, I don't think that the 10 Commandments should be posted. The 10 Commandments are specific to two religions, and only two religions. Although our country was founded on religion, it is also founded on freedom of choice. If we are posting these as historical documents, then there should also be the beliefs of every other religion right next to them.
I am in tenth grade and have attended a private religious school in the past. From studying most of the religions of the world on my own, I have realized that basically all religions' laws say the same thing. It doesn't matter how many there are, ten for the Jewish faith or 13 for the Wiccan; they both state not to do bad.
Although today's society seems to be lacking in the morals once taught by parents and television shows, the children still know that you're not to go and kill someone. We don't need a reminder that our country supports Christianity over the Muslim faith, Paganism, Judiasm, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.
In my school, the 10 Commandments are not posted, there are no prayer services, and teachers teach evolution. Although certian aspects related to one religion aren't defined, the students all treat each other more or less with respect. (And truthfully, I think it's pointless to put the 10 Commandments in public schools also because A) No one would read them, and B) They would end up destroyed like the rest of the posters.)
If it helps at all with your opinion, I am baptised Catholic, raised Methodist, converted to Wiccan. And I have a pretty good grasp on a few other religions.

By: Brimmy - 2003-06-25
Well some parts of the 10 commandments might be ok to put in schools. A lot of it is good morals. "Obey thy father and mother" and stuff like that. The religious parts might conflict with other religions though.

Why we have the problems we do !!
By: danny - 2003-08-21
before christianity was removed from our schools, children were not getting in the trouble they are now. take God out of the picture, and then you have no morals on which to stand. cayas happens
side note: you can try to take God out of the public arena, but you cannot take God from our hearts !!! you may not believe now, but one day you will have your opportunity to stand in front of God and explain your actions....those who choose not to believe, are taking a gamble; betting on God is not one i would like to make...at least if i'm wrong, i'm just dead rotting flesh...but if we christians are right, then while God will know us, how will you explain why you doubted him...this is the proving ground...no second chances. no excuses will be considered.

Why should we not? let me list...
1. we ARE NOT a Christian nation, the Constitution never refers to Jesus or any exclusively Christian concepts. Jefferson wrote elsewhere that when he wrote the words "G-d" he meant not only Judeo-Christian, but Hindu, Muslim, and all others.
2. The 10 Commandments are not only moral guidelines. Remember #s 1-4.
3. If it isnt about Judeo-Christian vs. the world, then why not put up Islam's 5 pillars or Buddha's Eightfold path?
4. Maybe our roots were a religious nation, but our roots could also be called white and male. Very few people would suggest that we return there simply because "that's our roots".
5. They would be offensive to other relgions. Some religions build idols, many are polytheistic, etc.
6. The reason the constitution doesn't reference Atheism is not becuase it is immoral, but because there was no such thing back then.
Thats all I can think of now. By the way, I'm a proud Jew. My objections aren't against religion, only against its mixing with the state.

Why not?
By: Debra - 2003-09-02
As a Christian citizen, I see things that I find offensive daily. Billboards display half nude men and women and even general historical representations such as scupltures of ancient peoples and gods are displayed everywhere. Why should the Ten Commandments be high-lighted? If I don't want to see these offensive things, I do not look! Can other citizens ignore yet another historical document/reference? Why not?

You're Joking Right?
By: Emma - 2003-11-10
I am Christian myself, but not everyone is. There are Jews, Muslims, Buddhists etc. Even though, in our pledge of allegiance, it states, "...in GOD we trust..." that is NOT referring to any god. They only state because every religon has a god. Student might also feel that they must be Christian to go to that school, and if handled correctly, their parents can complain to the Board of Ed. The school shouldn't impose on anything like religon!
|
 |

No, public schools have a mixture of different religons. The Ten Commandments is a way of Christain/ Catholic life. So I am against the Ten Commandments being in a PUBLIC school.

Seriously
By: Katherine Lewis - 2003-11-13
.. no the ten commandments should not be posted. it is an outrage to the consitiution, and let me remin you, the constitution is the basis for everything this country stands for. if religion is outlawed in schools, so are the ten commandments, even if it is "teaching moral" .. but hey, isnt that the parents and the churches and synagogues jobs?.. oh yea.. and not all people are chrisitian.. and we cant pull that
"DONT LOOK" stuff, because hey, you would have to look at it at least once to see what it is, right?
posting the ten commandments puts other religions other than those included into the shadows, getting them upset, offended and depressed. and what about the agnostic, atheist and wiccan? so beside the ten commandments should we put a poster of satan and another poster of nothing up too? then we'd be almost appeased, but wait, what about jews, hindus and all of those other guys,. dont you think their religious backgrounds deserve the same treatment? .. dont you think that posting these commandments which are already included in the laws puts the students in a situation for religious discrimination. all the posting of the ten commandments does is not teach morals as intended, but instead teach ignorance and religious intolerance.
thank you,
katherine!

Absolutely!!!!!
By: Mario - 2003-11-16
The Ten Commandments are a definite necessity in public schools today. They are a moral code that, no matter your religion/beliefs, as a person you should comprehend and live by. In fact most if not all major religions have moral codes that must be followed and as long as those codes are positive they should be posted in public places and especially in schools where children can view them. Ultimately the posting of these moral codes can only be positive.

If the Ten Commandments were posted in school, they would not necessarily require the teachings of religion in school or the obedience of these laws. It would, in my opinion, be just another poster or sign in the school. I believe that if evolution can be taught in school, than creation can be taught in school also. Because both are theories without substancial evidence, neither one can be proved, allowing both to be correct scientific theories. And what exactly is the "seperation of church and state" law? To my knowledge, it does not even exist. Creation deserves to be part of a public curriculum just as much as evolution. How would it be fair to only show one side and not the other. I'm not saying that not-believing in a God is right or wrong. I understand both sides of the theory. But if slavery can be taught in school, which offends people, then why can't all religion possibilities. If God does exist and I don't accept Him, I don't want to have to consider the consequences. Besides, if God doesn't exist, how do we, and why do we have a conscience?

I am a Christian i do believe that they should be posted. at my school we have character traits. That is where every month there is a different trait to live by. They were based on the 10 commandments. What is the world coming to when what our country was based on God they are trying to take out? And by the way as long as there are believers PRAYER CAN NEVER BE TAKEN OUT!

ok some schools have had tremondous problems like drugs, gangs, and shootings, but one one school they put the ten commandments up and we got responses like i never knew that there was something saying that you couldn't kill or saying that you shouldn't hate people or cheat and that is what the ten commandments teaches us. I do know that is says that you shouldn't worship any god other than me, but that's not the whole point of the ten commandments its that you should love your neighbor as you love yourself. The people that are saying to take it down from courtrooms and other places then all they are looking for is to stir up trouble. I think that if you take those commandments down then schools that prevoiusly had drugs, gangs, and shootings before the ten commandments went up, if you take them down, all of this would go back to the way it was and no one wants a school or anywhere else full of hate and crime, that is not the world that we should live in we should grow up in a world of kindness and love.

Yes I think the ten commandments should be up in all schools. The ten commandments are rules. The people that say that the ten commandments should not be up is because they do not belive in the Lord and want to have to look at them, because they are there does not mean you have to look at them or read them.

should ten commandments be put in school
By: no name - 2004-01-20
I say they should because it will help kids stay away from drugs and gangs like people read about the no killing there might even be less shootings in schools i am a Christian and go to a private school and I also thnik it might even help children in their lifes to make the right desisions and if you are not Christian I don't mean to change your religion but I hope you live your life the right way and if you are Christian God wants you to enjoy your life but also pray and do good deeds and he loves you live each day like it your last and if you don't follow the ten c's you will have to answer to God.And if you do sin remmember god forgives.

Christianity All The Way
By: Megan - 2004-01-27
YES!!! the Ten Commandments should be posted in the schools. I am a Christian and this is AMERICA-ONE NATION UNDER GOD. Not under Budah or whatever. We are falling apart as the United States! We are letting these non-christian believers take over. God is not going to be happy with us if we dont continue spreading his name. The Ten Commandments are guide lines for us to follow and they should be followed by all because we are all created by Jesus Christ. Wheather you like it or not.

No I don't think they should!
By: Jessica - 2004-02-10
I have been reading all of these comments and they are all VERY good. Whether you are for or against the 10 Commandments being posted in schools. I am doing a project in school right now in my World Civilizations class and i have been researching this topic. Myself, I believe that they should not be posted for numerous reasons. Yes this world was all creadted by Jesus Christ, but not everybody is christian. There may be others out there that have beliefs in multiple gods, a different single god or even no god at all. If you are going to post one thing for one religion, then you should post things for every other religion practiced in the United States as well...and they don't. I believe in god very much and i do not go to church every week, but i still believe that the 10 commandments should NOT be posted in schools.

All the way...!!
By: Bethany - 2004-04-12
The Ten Commandments should be posted in the public school system. Doing this act would be no different than posting school rules in the hallways. And even then, not all people obey those rules. It would be a good reminder to those who actually try to follow the rules that God has set before all of mankind. It is important that we realize, not only to older people who are more knowledgable, that if our government system can base their fundamentals on what the Bible says, then there should be no reason that the Ten Commandments, which are from the Bible, should not be shared with the rest of the country. Anyways, the Bible is what our government based our country on, how are we to argue with that type of authority?
|
 |
 |
why make a big deal about it!
By: Ash - 2004-10-08
I dont know why everyone is making a big deal about the ten commandments being in public places. They are what we should live by and respect. I think people want to take them away from public places so they dont have to look at the truth. They want to forget about what they need. And by doing this, we are hindering ourselves, not helping. If someone is really that upset about them being posted, then they show that they know the truth. They just dont want to see it.

The ten commandments are what our nation was built on basically. like people say " people dont have to read them " so if u are atheist or whatever, dont read them. The ten commandents are what we believe in and are morals. Im not a christan but i still believe in god, and strongly believe they should be posted again in schools

which version would they use?
By: tiffany - 2005-02-03
i do not think it would be a good idea for the government to post the ten commandments in public schools because there is no way to decide which version to use. president bush suggested they use the "standard version", however, no such version exists. There is the protestant version, the catholic version and the jewish version. plus, any version would have to be abbreviated, and isn't there something in the Bible that says something about not changing the text of the Bible??
there is too much controversy over this, and it is my opinion that religion should be taught where it can be explained: in church and at home. religion only belongs in the classroom when it is a religious school. certain religious beliefs should not be imposed on others simply because they are the beliefs of the majority. children go to school to learn 'reading, 'writing and 'rithmetic, not what they could be learning every sunday in church.
thank you.

Think Ethics, Not God
By: Kate - 2005-02-07
I feel that the ethics of the commandments are very important. No matter what you believe in or who your god is, or even if you have a god. Children need to be taught that you don't lie, you don't steal, you listen to your parents, you don't say bad things and other ethical behaviors. But I think these can all be taught in school without using religion. If you wish to have your children brought up in a particular faith that they should be at a school where that is specifically taught.

how can we take down something down that GOD wanted us to put up. why are people getting offended by the ten commandments. its just a sign, if your going to cry then dont look at it. if you dont believe in GOD i am very sorry for you because god will judge us all one day. Not helping putting the ten commandments back up is like not helping GOD do something he wants you to do. non- believers will all find out on JUDGEMENT DAY.

10 commandments
By: Alex - 2005-11-10
I believe that the 10 commandments should be allowed in our public schools. As a christian they are the laws i abide by in my every day life. Not only are they christian laws they are incorporated throughout our judical system. These commandments do not just state religious terms, but basic rules that all children should learn to follow. If the question is do the ten commandments interfere with rights of other religions,"that answer is no". Our forefathers based our amendments and laws upon the christian faith an we should continue to abide by them.

By: genevieve - 2005-11-21
i think that they should be allowed, nobody is forcing them to look at the commandments and follow them. they are just there for the people who want to follow the commandments, and if people of another religion wanted to put something like that up i wouldent canre because i would not have to follow them if i didnt want to.

Posting them up isnt forcing you to look at them they are just there for those who do believe and want to live their life the right way! They could keep many from making wrong decisions such as murder or stealing. NO questions asked .. it should be posted!

Yes, they should be aloud and all religion should be allowed in school. I believe that by removing it we have done harm to our children, now they do harm to others. Guns in school, violance, sex, and drug use has all become even worse since they have removed it.
