quite silly i think. the speed limit is only 25. people are not going to get hit unless they are just stupid and walk out into the road right in front of a car. they could even lower the speed limit to 10 or something when the program was going on.

The speed limit is 25, but you could only go about 5 because of all the heavy traffic. The road should not be closed because of "accidents".

Barricades?

The speed limit has nothing to do with it. The absence of traffic, entirely, is the point. How nice it is to walk the streets without cars disturbing the peace.

Broadway on Sat. nights
By: JT - 2001-06-07
If you've ever been to New Orleans, Bourbon St. is blocked of nightly when the tourist seasons pick up. You can't drive down it, but you can drive on the cross streets. It works really well and makes the atmosphere. It would be totally different if cars were allowed to go up and down, no matter the speed.

closing of Broadway
By: Susan Campbell - 2001-06-07
I think they should have compromised and closed one lane in the affected area.

Why wait until a serious accident happens to take action?Protecting pedestrians and drivers is the only right way to do this and that is to close Broadway during Saturday Night activities

I got it, lets barricade the whole town. That way, everyone will have to stay in their houses in peace and safety!
Actually, it does make sense to close the street. There are hardly any businesses open at that time, and even if there was, you would not be able to find a parking space. So there is no real reason to keep it open, other than for the people that just like to drive on it for pleasure. (well, I don't know how pleasurable it would be after having to wait 30 minutes trying to get through from all the traffic and people in the road) If people want to go all the way to the river, make them walk!

Broadway

Most every weekend my husband and I, equipped with grandchildren, would drive down Broadway. We would park for a while across from different musical groups
and listen for a while, then move on to another. We enjoyed that very much. If Broadway is closed or parking prohibited, it will put an end to this for us. Due to medical conditions, neither my husband nor I are able to walk any distance.
I would like to have a free AboutPaducah.com T-Shirt.
Thank you.

it is about time the city got wise and closed broadway for After Dinner on Saturday, they should also do it on Friday night. as far as the restaurants go, I eat down down a lot and i never have been able to park less then several blocks away from the restaurant. i am a firm believer that if the restaurant has that good of a menu then people would walk to get there, i sure would. a stroll down broadway on one's way to eat is relaxing and very enjoyable. the public lot and parking by farmers market is only three blocks from the furthermost restaurant.

foot traffic
By: torre - 2001-07-03
people are slowly becoming accustomed to the fact that the road is blocked off.
right after they did it, people were still cramming together on the sidewalk, and i'd be lying if i said i didn't do the same thing. old habits are hard to shake :-D
i was opposed to the idea at first, but its obvious people have more ROOM downtown on saturdays now. i vividly recall large crowds standing in the street around performers, and traffic inching along right next to them. it was obviously a dangerous situation.

With so many people filling the downtown area on Saturday night it only makes sense to barricade Broadway. How many times have we had to spill over into the street when the sidewalks were full?
If one accident is avoided the barricades are worth every inconvenience.
People will complain if you are giving away cash. They will GET OVER IT!

Paducah on Saturday Night
By: Quincy - 2001-07-06
I've been downtown when the roads were open and since they've blocked the roads. It's much nicer and easier to enjoy the entertainment when you're not crammed together like so many sardines.

Are the people in Paducah so stupid that they cannot watch out for traffic or watch their kids? I have been to Gatlinburg a lot & they don't have their roads closed & they have a lot more traffic than we do. I always liked sitting at CC Cohens & watching the traffic go by while eating. So much for that now!
