Long Forgotten Voice of Engine 1518
By: Richard Weisenberger - 2001-07-11
As part of 1518's complete restoration I would like to see a compressed air system installed with a large air receiver and a timer controlled solenoid to blow the engine's steam whistle at noon and on other special occasions.
The sound would be a revelation to the generations that never heard anything other than a diesel's air horn, which I'm sure includes more than half of Paducah.
This would not only be feasible, but relatively inexpensive to accomplish, as well as a great tourist attraction for the city. I would be happy to provide any technical advice necessary to get this accomplished. I am very much into the physics of whistles.

Website has Moved
By: Richard Weisenberger - 2002-01-30
My website on the Physics behind the Sound of Organ Pipes and Whistles has moved to http://rjweisen.topcities.com
If you have been trying to contact me at my old address you will no longer find me.
I would definitely like to see something done with the whistle on engine 1518, as I think hearing it blow again would help boost tourism in Paducah.
The means for blowing the whistle would only involve adding an air compressor, receiving tank, solenoid valve and timer. Surely there is someone interested in furthering this proposal. I would be glad to help with any technical matters.

Steam train whistles & bells
By: Lee Sumpter - 2005-07-24
My grand son is 4+ years old & loves old stream train whistles.
Do you know of a web site that has different whistles & bells to listen to?
There was about a year ago a web site: "Pull the whistle cord" this site had many sounds to listen to but no more.
In 1957 the year I finished high school I worked on the NYC spur out of Chicago as a tower operater. Sadly the electronic age did away with my job. I too love the sounds of the stem whistles & bells. Hope you can help.
Thx, Lee Sumpter, born in Nancy, Ky & a Kentucky Colonel.

Train Whistle
By: Shane Seales - 2005-11-05
we just finished building my sons a train out of wood. It is a steam train design. We was looking to add a train whistle to it to make it more realistic for them. Do you know of anywhere that has plans to make a whistle that could be hooked up to a standard home air compressor? Thanks ahead for any input.

Train Whistle
By: Richard Weisenberger - 2006-01-31
I can furnish plans and sounds of a wooden toy train whistle I designed. It sounds real and is as loud as a standard car horn using only shop vac exhaust. It does not easily overblow like most toy whistles.
If you are into building real steam whistles, I can also furnish plans.
