 Gay and Lesbian Community
 By: Artangel - 3/10/05 (10:01 PM)

Paducah is promoting itself as an international destination for art and artists. How diverse and accepting is the community?

I lived there 19 years and never saw the community accepting of the GLBT community. You mus remember Paducah is the buckle of the bible belt and to many christians homosexuality and christianity can not co-exist.

The G&L should ALL go somewhere like Alcatraz where they can live in peace & harmony among their own kind and stop trying to corrupt a decent society!

I hope Kevin Terry and Sam Martin are not the typical Kentuckians, while in Houston for Labor Day 2005, they showed thier ass and stupidity, while trying to argue state laws with bar tenders. They showed how backwards they are, and are obviously not the kind of owners of a GAY bar or any bar should have. What idiots. Maybe if they shut up long enough to listen they would not have been asked to leave!! Please do not come back to Houston you fools.!!

Visiting Paducah 10/6 to 10/13 and was wondering if there was much of a gay presence in Paducah and/or where I might go to find it? Thanks!

I got envolved with the Paducah gay community @ 19. Paducah doesnt mind having a gay bar, but would rather not talk about it. The gay community is fickle, takes alot to keep their attention, and for the most part, no one has been able to that so far. We seem to get ingnorant club owners/managers that take advantage of the community by high cover prices, low quality entertainment, and high drink prices. What the owner finds "entertaining" doesn't necissarily mean the patrons find "entertaining". Quality Experiences are what matter most, perfect that, and the rest falls into place. I give Club Dv8 a "C".

What is sad about Paducah and its gay community is that there is no support amongst the gays in the community. DV8 is the only gay bar in Paducah, but childish and ignorant bicker is what keeps peeps from going there because they a) have issues with the bar owners or b) feel that their needs should be catered to and bowed down to just because they are gay going to a gay bar. The cover is the same at the gay bar as it is at the straight bars. In order to make something work we as a community must come together and allow it to work. We can all bicker and bitch and sit back and wait for change to happen, but change only comes when people make it happen. I am the show director at DV8 and I will be the first to admit there are issues, but it is our only gay bar. If you let it die, it will be a while before there is another. We are taking steps to make it different and better, but things take time to develop and if you are being cut off at the knees it is hard to begin to take the next step towards growth. If you want this bar and the community to flourish stop bitching online and take a stand. Otherwise it will be the same regardless.

Well, its good to see other opinions from our community. Its really sad that we are talking about our community coming together at a.....BAR! The idea of a united gay community is nice but, will have to take place elsewhere, other than in a profit driven business. I totally agree everything "Kara Belle" stated, however, just because we are gay, doesnt mean we all have to like each other and get along. Keep in mind, dv8 is supposed to be a business, instead it is a haven for glorification, in a pecking order of course. In fact, I was "show hostess" for a period of time, and I think they expect the kind of shows they go and see in major cities, and expect that from our area entertainers, but with only a smaller budget. There is no way to obtain that kind of show without spending the bucks. Finding someone who has a huge draw that will work for next to nothing, forking out the dollars for an expensive hobby, is rare. The entertainers in our area have to have a day job to support their hobby, while the bar owners profit off of their talent. If thats they way bars want to conduct business, then an average business they will have, but if they want to take a good hard look at why their doors are open, and treat people with respect and fairness, they will get that ideal bar business they've been expecting. I admit at the end of my time at dv8, it wasnt pretty. But all the time before that, I remember a packed out bar, with entertainers who really tried to get along and make dv8 a special place to come. Now, I just think the proof is in the pudding.

I set out at 19 to be a professional entertainer. I achieved that goal in my early 20's and after 10 years of bars to casino show rooms, I can tell ya right now, as long as there are drag queens and admirers of such, there will be childish bickering and grand attitudes. There will always be newbies and underbidding queens to take your place.

Hmm...I found that the community was actually rather accepting of Gays and Lesbians in the area. However, I personally think the problem there is the GAY community...which is not even a community. Catty queens and tired, dried up, bitter old men sit and bitch about how things need to change. There are many of us, such as botht he Rachels and I among others who have tried to help the "community" there. The simple fact is most of the GLBT people in Paducah are closet cases that skulk about in the gay bar and never want to help and contribute for the God-Sent fear of damnation and the "What would my mom say if she saw me involved in that?" mentality.

Is there still a gay/lesbian bar in Paducah. I am coming home this weekend and would enjoy a nice drink and a confortable atmosphere after a HS reunion meeting I am having. I have tried looking on the net for DV* a club I used to know of but I cannot seem to find them.

Any information would be very helpful. Also if there is a bar is anyone going out Friday night? I will be all alone and I am used to having a passell of friends - so I would love to meet up with some people I can consider new friends!

Hoep to hear from someone.

I have just recently been informed that this message board exsisted . I plan to respond to ALL comments , accusations , and outright slander towards DV8 , Sam Martin and myself at a later date . I do however want to respond to Tab . The DV8 that you used to know of closed almost 11 yrs ago . We have reopened a new DV8 2 yrs ago at a different location . 2118 Bridge St .inspite ofcomments in "message board " you will find the club better than ever ! Keep in mind the bad comments on here about DV8 are from only 1 person and that person has not been to DV8 in a year and a half AND was fired from his / her position . So considering those two facts I think it is obvious why this person would "talk @!#$" about my club . A) the person hasn't been there in 1.5 yrs and implies that we have less of a crowd than when he / she was there which is an absolute fabrication (our customer count is better than ever ) and B) this individual was (like I said earlier) "let go " from their "position" in the club hence .... a disgruntled employee . Soooo Tab please join us this weekend after your reunion . Be sure and get there before 10:00 and avoid the AVERAGE door cover and be sure and introduce yourself to us and let us know it's your first time there so you can collect your first drink on the house ! - Kevin Terry

The current gay club in Paducah is Club Dv8, and it was called "Chip's Place" and "The Pride Factory" at one time or another.

First, I would like to say it suprises me that this thread is still proceeding on, but more so it suprises me how our community is still so jaded. In my first post I talked about how the community needs to come together and make the "only gay bar" a fun and exciting place to go to, to watch quality entertainment. I respect you Miss Michaels immensely and all your accomplishments, but I would like to clarify that I did not mean to sound all "fanciful" in the coming together as a community that you imply. I was simply stating that people can either sit back on their ass and bitch about not having a "decent" bar to go for gays, or they can go to the only gay bar in Paducah and invite friends and make it a fun bar to go to. What I have learned in working at this bar for almost a year, as well as performing for almost 4 years, is that gay people treat their bars like an elementary school friend who stole their lunch and now they can never talk to them again. You have bad incidents at any bar, don't expect all rainbows and butterfly at a gay one. And as far as bar owners profiting from their entertainment. That's life. As entertainers we set our pay scale and then the rest of our profit is made through how we can entertain. As drag queens we are taught and learn early on that you really cannot profit on drag alone. This is known from queens in the business for 20 years to queens in the business for 2 years. Drag is a hobby not a job. Now, I will admit that I have had my own issues with my bar, but I will be the first person to say proudly that DV8 is one of the best bar to go to socialize and see quality, FRESH, entertainment as well as great drink specials. No, we are not big city queens, but we also are not a small town bar queen. Not to toot my own horn, but I am Miss Great Lakes USofA 1st alternate which qualifies me for Miss Gay USofA which will be held in Dallas, TX. I was also a top 12 finalist in the Miss Missouri USofA pageant. My castmates includes a 1st alternate to Miss River City America which means she qualifies for Miss Gay Tennesse America (Rochelle D'Leight), Paducah's own Blonde Barbie (Brianna Dupree), as well as the Mocha Essence of Beauty (Isyss). We attract entertainers from all over the Tri State area and DV8 can boast that several of the Miss USofA titleholders and as well as contestant have come through or works for this bar. You won't find better queens anyone else. TRUST. I could write a novel proclaiming how good or bad DV8 is, but what I suggest for those interested is to come to DV8 for yourself and check it out. That's the only way you will know how it is. We are opened Tues thru Sat with shows on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Karoake Thursday and Tuesdays we have drinks specials all night. Thank you and God Bless.

I went to DV8 for my first time Friday night. I am female and married but my brother is gay and was in town for a family function and talked me and my husband into going with him. I was afraid I would feel out of place but I did not and had a great time. The bar was not overcrowded and everyone seemed to have a good time. Cover charge and drink prices were reasonable and the free drink made it even better. It was also the first drag show I have ever seen and I have to say it was very good. The performers, Brianna Dupree and Kara Belle were poised and gracious even though there was not a big crowd and did their perfomances without a snag, I applaud you. The bartender was nice and made sure we was taken care of all night even when it got busy. I will definitely be back, keep up the good work.

Are there out lesbians in Paducah? Does anyone in Paducah identify as dyke, queer or trans? Or is that all big city talk to you.. Just wondering..I am checking out the artist relocation program, which is an amazing idea... but what about the queers and dykes, I don't want to be the only one : )

How great to see names I remember from years ago. Kevin, I hear great things about you. Having worked with you for many years as a show director when you were preforming...I know as an owner you must have some great ideals.

I am sure many things have changed over the years since I went to the bars. One thing that doesn't seem to have changed is the bickering. Believe me...I Know about bickering. I happen to be one of the old queers still in town.

I don't get out to the bars anymore since I have developed a breathing problem and am on oxygen at times. I would like to know if there is still a pride picnic.

Kevin, keep up the good work.
