The planned hog farm is in my neighborhood. Those of you who think the farm does not concern you should think again. If one hog farm is in operation in Western Kentucky others will follow. The next one may be next door to you. The value of your property could drop almost overnight.
Since we live in an area with heavy storms and tornados, there will be runoff from these farms and the land fertilized by the manure. Our groundwater may be contaminated. How many of you depend on well water?
Now comes the economy. Many people in Western Kentucky depend on the tourist industry. I sincerely doubt that people will be waiting in line to spend their vacation dollars in an area that reeks of hog manure.
What is now one hog farm will become a disaster for the entire area. Anyone who doubts this should visit North Carolina. Please help stop this.
Yes/No to Farmers

I would say that Farms have to follow strict guide lines from the government They have good ways of controling manure. It flows into tanks. Manure is good for the crops, but I guess you dont eat food so thats why you don't want a farm in your area. Farms also provide food and work. I guess there are no farmers left in Western Kentucky if you guys don't like manure. How can you complain about manure when your house produces tonns of sewage and waste and it all has to go somewhere to. The stores in your area must no sell meat then if the town doesn't like farmers.
Yes/No to Farmers

Wayne, you make a good point. But if one large farm comes in others are likely to follow like Wanda said. These big industrial farms have lots of hightech stuff and they can house alot of animals. They also pose a threat to any of the smaller family farms who may go out of business if a bigger farm is in the area. It's a fine line when it comes to supporting these big farmers. Wanda makes a good point about water being contaminated. But like you say Wayne Homes also produce waste but it is more controlable unlike large farms which have to spread it onto surronding fields or have it shipped out.

Yes/No to Farmers

I'd say yes to Hog Farms becuase Farmers also have to make money. They make alot so the can plant lots of crops and support there family. Being a farmer is tough work. Farmers supply stores with food so it would be a shame to live in a town with out a farm.

In this day and age most people already have to pay for water treatmend of their wells. I agree with the runoff off into the wells.

I am all for supporting area farmers, but smelling pigs all day is not what I have in mind. Wouldnt it benefit farmers and the economy just as much if the hog farm werent in someones back yard, but rather out in the country possibly where no homes are? There is plenty of undeveloped land out there that could be sold and used. Has anyone thought about a win win situation, instead of bickering back and forth?
