2003 AQS Quilt Show

by Corey Dunn (May 7, 2003)

Paducah, Quilt City USA, was the place to be in April 2003. Thousands of quilters made their way here to participate in the 19th Annual AQS Quilt Show and Contest at the Paducah Expo Center. The Quilt Show and Contest is one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Events and Top 10 Kentucky Event for the tip off of the spring tourism season.

There is more than $100,000 given away in cash and prizes during the AQS Quilt Show and Contest. Hancock’s of Paducah offers $18,000 as the Best of Show award. Bernina offers $12,000 for the Best Machine Workmanship award. AQS even offers $12,000 for the Best Hand Workmanship award. Several other sponsors of the event contribute thousands of dollars in prize money to be presented for various other categories.

More than 300 vendors make their way to Quilt City USA to offer some of the best quilting fabrics and notions. Quilters can also study quilting methods with internationally recognized instructors from all over the world. Not only can the quilters view some of the latest and most advanced techniques to date, they can also take a trip back in time in the National Quilt Museum and see techniques of times gone by.

Some of this year's winners are as follows:

Hancock’s of Paducah Best of Show was Philippa Naylor with her quilt "Lime Light" American Quilter's Society Hand Workmanship award went to Elsie M. Campbell with her quilt "Star Flower". Cynthia Schmitz with her quilt tastefully titled “Blueberry Morning” won the Bernina Machine Workmanship award.

If you would like to visit Quilt City USA during the 20th Annual AQS Quilt Show and Contest, call the Paducah Visitors Bureau at 1-800-PADUCAH. Additional information regarding activities can be received by contacting Executive Show Director Bonnie Browning at 270-898-7903.

Thank you.

Four of us are traveling into your area and would like to view your show. What is the best date to do so? We are not quilters so aren't interested in classes or demos - we want to see the submitted entries. Also, how far is Paducah from Cape Girardeau, Mo? Thank you.
