USEC 50th Anniversary
by Corey Dunn (November 5, 2002)
Paducah is home to the nation's only uranium enrichment facility, USEC. Paducah celebrated the 50th anniversary of USEC and its employees on October 24, 2002. Three new floodwall murals representing the historic construction and population boom of the early 1950s were unveiled.
Among many in attendance was USEC CEO Nick Timbers. Also there to help introduce the new floodwall murals were Skila Harris, Director of TVA and Leon Owens, President of Local 5-550 PACE. The Paducah Symphony played for the crowd, and USEC hosted a fireworks display after the unveiling.
Paducah owes a great deal to the USEC plant. The population of Paducah doubled as the construction workers entered the area, and retail sales rose from 44 million to 94 million as a result.
The PGDP murals can be seen at 2nd and Water Street in the lovely downtown district of Paducah, Kentucky.
