Alben Barkley Museum

by Corey Dunn (March 6, 2007)

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Alben Barkley Museum at 6th and Madison. Bill Crouch, Museum Treasurer, allowed me into the museum during its off season to take some pictures and talk to him about Alben Barkley.

Alben Barkley was the United State's 35th Vice President. Born just outside of Mayfield, Alben Barkley made his way to the White House by starting right here in McCracken county. He held several titles including County Attorney and County Judge. From here, he went on to become Kentucky State Representative. He ran for Governor in 1923, but was beaten. Alben Barkley was elected into the Senate in 1927, and held that office until for 21 years. He was the Senate Majority Leader when elected Vice President under Harry Truman. Few people know this, but Alben Barkley started the first draft of the United States Social Security Act right here in Paducah, Kentucky

The Alben Barkley Museum is housed in one of Paducah's oldest standing structures. The house was built in 1852 by the Smedleys, who were warfboat owners. The house went on to become the Alben Barkley Museum when Eurie Pearl Neel founded the museum in 1965. Eurie Pearl Neel was a history teacher at Franklin Junior High School.

The Museum is a great place for people of all ages to learn about Paducah's rich heritage. The museum is open from April through September. It is open to the public Saturday and Sunday 1-4 PM, and is available by appointment only for group tours throughout the week. If anyone would like more information about the museum, please contact Bill Crouch at 270-443-0512 or E-mail him at WCROUCH@APEX.NET

I am doing a graduate paper on why the Paducah plant was chosen for the uranium enrichment facility in 1950. It appears that Barkley would have played a significant role being Truman's Vice-President at the time. I would be interested to talk with Mr. Crouch to find out what his views are on this and if he can lead me in the right direction as far as research is concerned.

This has been a most interesting and enlightening site about one of America's most colorful and honorable public servants.

I was able to answer questions posed by two or three readers.

 By: David B. Mathis - 2005-01-23

I am the widower of Margaret Louise Force. She was the daughter of Wellington Humes Force and Mary Houser Force of Paducah, KY.born September 6, 1929.

I am trying to write all of the details of my wife's life.

Her Father, Wellington Humes Force was a friend (I don't know how close a friend) of Alben Barkley.
Alben Barkely was my wife's Godfather at her baptism, and I am told that A Barkley used to bounce her on his knee and came to call him "Uncle Alben".

If you can shed any light on this relationship, I would appreciate it.

Cordially, David B. Mathis

 Pts of Alben Barkley were
John Wilson Barkley and Electra (Smith) Barkley. Probable grandparent or aunt & uncle are found in 1880 Census of Graves Co.
A Alben G. Barkley 62, and wife Amanda L. 50, were listed in household 125-125 along with 4 children. Alben G was listed as native of NC, and wife native of KY. Census listing was for Pottsville P.O., very near where Alben the VP was born, which is south of Lowes apiece. Alben (VP) was also a member of the now defunct Mt. Carmel Presby. Ch., he showed up on the Sunday School ledger of that organization before they moved to a neighboring county.

 By: Mike F - 2005-03-18

I shouldve looked closer at an old set of notes and jogged my memory.
I forgot that Alben was born Willie Alben. He is indeed 5 households away from probable grandparents in 1880 census.

 Barkley...Lake
 By: DBEwing - 2006-01-31

Was the lake named in honor of the Veep? Do you know what towns were displaced by the formation/flooding in creation of Barley Lake?
 Barkley Lake
 By: Tim - 2006-02-02

Yes it was named for Alben Barkley. Several towns were displaced, the main one being Old Eddyville which is where the State Prison is. This was a thriving river town that is under water. The town relocated to the present cites of Eddyville and Kuttawa, dividing the population between these two cities, about 2 miles apart. Please check out my website for an on-line Barkely Museum. This is the worlds largest Alben Barkley collection in existance. There are new items being cataloge and added on a weekly basis. The address is: www.theautographcollector.net

Please let me know what you think.

 Alben W. Barkley Ancestry
 By: Donald Nelson - 2006-02-02

 Hello,
My grandfather, James Henry Barkley, b. August 17, 1896, told me when I was about 9 or 10 years old that VP Alben Barkley was a cousin to him. I am still trying to find a connection, but can't seem to get anywhere. The first known to me of all my Barkley ancestors is Lazarus Thomas Barkley, b. abt. 1740, Mathers, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He came to America and settled in Virginia. He died February 24, 1798 at his son Robert's home which I believe was in Little Levels, Bath County, Va. (now Pocahontas County, WV). Robert is the only son I know of, but he had at least 2 sisters, Elenor and Ester. Robert had at least 3 sons, Edward Edmund, Lazarus and Gabariel McNee Barkley. From that point on I haven't much information except for the direct line to my grandfather James Henry Barkley. Well, I do have many names of immediate descendants of the direct line, but none of their descendants. Anyone who can help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Dorothy is a daughter of his. Her brother is Alben William Barkley the 3rd. He was Kentucky's Agriculture Commisioner from 1987 -91. Davids sister had a son named Stephen Truitt. He is the grandson that first used the nickname "VEEP" for his Grandfather.

 Hi
Found a first edition, presentation copy to Dave Barkley of "The Story of the New York Times" signed by Meyer Berger that reads "to Dave Barkely, Son of the Veep, but a VIP in his own right. With sincere good wishes".
and dated Aug 29, 1952. Any insight? I was just going to list it on Ebay. It has a few other Times people scribbles.
Thanks

 The Veeps Great Grandson
 By: William R Crouch - 2006-06-18

Alben Barkley III has a son "Clay" that is employed by Jonathon Miller in Frankfort and goes to school at UK.He's studying political science. You will probably hear more from him in the near future.
Stephen Truitt who coined the term "VEEP" had a brother named Alben William Truitt that passed away several years ago.
The story of Mrs Jayne Barkley is as such. She died of an overdose of prescription medicine.Wheather it was suicide or accidental has been debated and I think the family believes she died from an accidental overdose. The press wanted to make a huge story of her death and the possibility of suicide sold more storys that an accident.
I'm a personal friend of the Barkley Family and have had the good fortune of having heart to heart talks with some of them.
This year marked the 50th Anniversity of Alben Barkley's death while giving The Keynote speech at the Young Democrats mock Democratic Convention at Washington and Lee University on April 30,1956.
After very forcefully saying the words "I Would Rather Be A Servant In The House of The Lord Than To Sit In The Seats of The Mighty". The lifelong servant of the Citizens of The USA fell dead of a massive heart attack.
Mr Barkley was an honest political servant. When he died his estate was valued at 700,000 dollars.Taxes took over 500,000 of that.
The greatest personal property was his house and all of his furnishings
The estate was tragically broken into many pieces after our local congressman stopped a bill that would have bought the property and contents and turned the property into a National Historic treasure.
The Tim of Wingo that posts a lot of messages on here and his friend Tim of Long Pond,Pa bought a sizeable amount of the small things in the estate and now they share them with the world in the online Alben Barkley Museum..Thanks you Guys
I would like to invite all of you to The Real Alben Barkley Museum at 533 Madison Street

They are 11.95ea.or 20.00 for both.I give all money I receive for the CD's to the Alben Barkley Museum.

HI. my dad was named A.G. Barkley, and his sister Margaret. Weve always been told it was after the veeps siblings. does anyone know of a link to Alabama, Madison Co.
We also have a Fred Barkley who served in the war.
 Correction to Bill Crouch posting
 By: Tim - 2006-07-01

I am one of the two "Tims" Mr Crouch mentions. I hardly consider significant holdings of the Veeps furniture, clothing, walking canes, whisky decanters, wine decanters, dishes , personal papers and other highly personal items that comprise hundreds of peices "only small items". Further, these have been exhibited to thousands of schoolchildren across the country philanthropically by me. Yes, now they are being made available online at including the veeps personal papers being made available to scholars. Thank you for allowing me to correct your error.
