Paducah's BBQ on the River 2000
by Corey Dunn (September 30, 2000)
Paducah's 6th Annual BBQ on the River was, yet again, a major success. Crowds from the tri-state converged at Paducah's riverfront this weekend to eat some of the best BBQ from around the nation.
Cooks began preparations Thursday night in anticipation of crowds who began gathering as early as Friday morning. However, some cooks underestimated Paducah's hunger for great BBQ. By Saturday afternoon, some of the best BBQ was only a memory!
Ohio State Fair champion, Smokin' Joe's, traveled all the way from Columbus, Ohio this weekend to share its BBQ sauce with Paducah. Their secret sauce had people lined up and down the riverfront.
Ole Ray's sauces made its first debut in Paducah this weekend, bringing its highly guarded secret sauce all the way from Cincinnati.
Local talent, Porky's, also brought a highly recognized sauce provided by Kentucky Pork Producers, out of Elizabethtown.
Charitable booths were also set up at BBQ on the River with the likes of Elvis and even a real BBQ pig head, collecting money for Child Watch and local representatives.
Charles Bulla was among the many guests who enjoyed BBQ and the great weather. Charles, however, did have a complaint. He was perplexed by the amount of lemonade versus the lack of restrooms at the event. Charles said he did the math: One toilet for every 1,000 gallons of lemonade served!
I have to say I certainly ate my share of BBQ. Great weather and a huge turnout at this event have created a great anticipation for Paducah's 7th annual BBQ on the River!
