2005 AQS Quilt Show
by Corey Dunn (April 27, 2005)
The 21st annual AQS Quilt Show kicked off April 20th, 2005 in Paducah Kentucky. This year the show brought over 35,000 people to the Paducah area. The large crowds may be troublesome at times, but area people welcome the quilters year after year with open arms and business doors.
I had a chance to see these beautiful quilts firsthand at the Executive Inn’s Expo Center. I had my sights on the best of the best. The Hancock’s Best of Show went to Margaret Docherty for her inspiring quilt named “Birds and Roses”. The AQS handed Zena Thorpe the Hand Workmanship Award for her work on “Alabaster Relief”. Machine Workmanship was at its best on Shirley P Kelly’s whimsical quilt appropriately named “Puffins”.
As I strolled along the crowd looking at the beautiful quilts I had an opportunity to talk to a few of the visiting quilters. Carol Shequen, a vendor, shared with me that this Quilt Show was worth a long drive all the way form Texas. “ I come to meet people, and get some great ideas for quilts I could never think of. There are so many sharing people that attend.” Noreen Sandy, a quilting teacher from Illinois, said she comes to the Quilt Show for “inspiration and to have a chance to see quilts that she could never make”.
As I noticed the prize money that is involved with the annual event, it made me aware that with only 360 days left till the next quilt show I better get started on my own quilt soon!
See ya next year, and HAPPY QUILTING!!
