Kentenia State Forest WMA

3,624 acres in Harlan Co.

This area has mountainous, steep terrain, with narrow ridge tops
and numerous rock outcroppings. It is completely forested, primarily in hardwoods. Grouse, deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, and fox. Sight-seeing and hiking are available on Little Shepherd Trail.

To get to Kentenia State Forest take US 421, 3.5 mi. N from intersection with US 119 to Trail 1679 (Little Shepherd Trail, which is the only road through area).

    Fire trails provide limited access to the interior of this area. The terrain is mountainous and primarily forested. Squirrel and grouse can be found here. Recreational opportunities and lodging are available at Pine Mountain State Resort Park. There are many scenic overlooks in area.

    Kentucky Ridge State Forest is located 5 mi. SW of Pineville on KY 190.

  • 25,529 acres in Leslie Co. and Clay Co.

    The terrain of this area is hilly to steep with gentle slopes in bottomlands and on ridge tops. It is mostly forested with approximately 200 acres of openings and 25 mi. of improved hiking trails. Deer, turkey, squirrel, raccoon, and grouse can be found here. There are no developed facilities. For camping check with owner.

  • 961 acres in Letcher Co. and Pike Co.

    Two portions of this national forest extend into Ky., 845 acres
    in Letcher Co. on KY 932 and 116 acres in Pike Co., which can be reached by a trail up Vanover Hollow from KY 197. Both tracts on the Kentucky-Virginia border offer extremely steep and mountainous terrain. Squirrel, deer, turkey, grouse, and raccoon. For camping check with owner.

  • 13,558 acres in Jackson Co.

    This area is primarily hilly with steep slopes and long, narrow ridge tops, with flats only in bottoms and on tops of ridges. It is mostly forested with approximately 30 acres of openings. Deer, turkey, raccoon, squirrel, grouse, quail, rabbit, and squirrel can be found here. There are no developed facilities. For camping check with owner.

    This area is hilly with some gently sloping ridge tops and is forested in hardwoods. Squirrel, deer, raccoon, and grouse can be found here. There are no developed or marked roads or trails. Lodging and recreational facilities are available at Carter Caves State Resort Park.
