White tail deer, turkey, small game & waterfowl
LBL offers more than 230 days of hunting opportunities throughout the year. Western Kentucky is ranked #7 in the March 2006 edition of "Outdoor Life" ias one of the TOP 10 HOT SPOTS for hunting whitetail deer. Five days of spring quota hunts for turkeys and 14 days of open season yield a consistently good harvest. Hunters also find opportunities for small game and waterfowl hunting at LBL. Captivating in its primeval beauty, sometimes ghostly and mysterious with imposing cypress standing guard over a water carpet of lotus, this area is always alive, always alluring. For the paddler whose canoe allows exploring without restriction, the lakes of the Ballard WMA offer unparalleled serenity and an opportunity to observe firsthand myriad forms of bird, animal, and fish life. Once a collection of more than twenty farms, the Ballard Wildlife Management Area is now a refuge for migratory waterfowl.

Each winter this 8,373-acre, state-owned tract along the Ohio River gets hundreds of thousands of Canada, snow, and blue geese, plus thousands of mallards, wigeons, and other ducks. Bald eagles also nest here. Modern gun season for deer opens in November, while archery season begins in September and runs through January. Kentucky also has spring and fall seasons for turkey.
