670,000 acres in From Tenn. line in McCreary Co. N to Fleming Co. and Lewis Co.
Many US, state and county roads lead into and cross this area, which also has forest roads and marked hiking trails in many sections. It is primarily mountainous with many sections that are quite steep and rugged, but with some fairly flat
river and creek bottoms and ridge tops also. Deer, squirrel, rabbit, grouse, fox, raccoon, quail, and turkey can be found here. Migratory waterfowl and bald eagles are often seen around Cave Run and Laurel lakes. There are many trout streams and small lakes throughout and several rivers offer float fishing.
Several recreational areas are maintained by the U.S. Forest Service that offer camping, picnicking, hiking, etc. Maps and additional information are available from the U.S. Forest Service, Winchester, KY 40391. NOTE: Much land within forest boundaries is still privately owned and permission should be obtained before entering these private holdings. Owned by U.S. Forest Service.

This area is primarily hilly with steep slopes and long, narrow ridge tops, with flats only in bottoms and on tops of ridges. It is mostly forested with approximately 30 acres of openings. Deer, turkey, raccoon, squirrel, grouse, quail, rabbit, and squirrel can be found here. There are no developed facilities. For camping check with owner.
961 acres in Letcher Co. and Pike Co.
Two portions of this national forest extend into Ky., 845 acres
in Letcher Co. on KY 932 and 116 acres in Pike Co., which can be reached by a trail up Vanover Hollow from KY 197. Both tracts on the Kentucky-Virginia border offer extremely steep and mountainous terrain. Squirrel, deer, turkey, grouse, and raccoon. For camping check with owner.
3,624 acres in Harlan Co.
This area has mountainous, steep terrain, with narrow ridge tops
and numerous rock outcroppings. It is completely forested, primarily in hardwoods. Grouse, deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, and fox. Sight-seeing and hiking are available on Little Shepherd Trail.
